So why are there still websites out there that don’t display properly on a smartphone screen?

The truth of the matter is, in this day and age, responsive web design is no longer optional. If you want your website to generate qualified leads and real sales revenues, then it absolutely, positively must be responsive.

Let’s take a look at some numbers to show you just how important responsive web design really is:

By the end of 2014, the number of mobile web users will surpass the number of desktop users for the first time in history. That means a majority of your visitors are going to be coming from mobile phones.

Out of all mobile searches, 70 percent will lead to on-site actions (purchasing an item, entering an email address, etc), as long as the site is mobile-optimized. If it’s not, those numbers drop to just 30 percent.

According to a Google survey, 48 percent of users said that if a site doesn’t load properly on their smartphone, it makes them feel like the company doesn’t care about their business. Wow!

As of last year, there were a whopping 232 different screen resolutions. In 2010, there were only 97. If you’re site isn’t responsive, you can pretty much bet it’s not displaying right for at least 100 or more different devices and screens.

A whopping 85 percent of adults think a company’s mobile site should be as good, if not better, than their desktop-friendly site. That’s a pretty overwhelming margin!

In a study of smartphone in tablet users, nearly half of respondents complained that too many websites aren’t optimized for mobile. In another study, 46 percent of mobile users reported having difficulties interacting with websites.

Out of companies that have an optimized-for-mobile site, 62 percent see an increase in online sales because of it.

To make matters worse, only 22 percent of all marketers say they’re savvy in responsive design. A shocking 23 percent even say they’re “behind the times” in it! So that means, even if you’re working with a marketing firm or agency, chances are they’re not much more up-to-speed than you are!
